Vision Test

Your DOT physical exam helps ensure that you're capable of handling the demands of your job. If you're a truck driver or have another job that requires a CDL, it's likely that you're on the road for long periods of time. At Johnson Chiropractic and DOT Center in Sparks, NV, we can provide tests needed for your physical, including your vision test.

.

What to Expect During Your Vision Test

The goal of your vision test is to measure your vison. This is done using the Snellen eye chart, which is a chart consisting of lines of letters that progressively decrease in size.

During your test, you'll be asked to read the letters in each line. You'll start by reading the larger letters on the top line and will continue to read the smaller letters in lower lines.

It's important to measure the vision in both of your eyes, so you may also be asked to read lines of the chart with one eye covered. Some people might have better vision in one eye than the other.

Your vision test will also measure your field of vision and your ability to distinguish between different colors. If you're colorblind, you may not be able to tell the difference between traffic signals. As a truck driver, this impairment can put you and other drivers at risk.

What Are the DOT Vision Requirements?

In order to pass the DOT vision exam, you must have at least 20/40 vision in both of your eyes. This means that you can see things from 20 feet that someone without vision impairment can see from 40 feet. You must also be able to distinguish between colors and have a minimum field of vision of 70 degrees in both eyes.

If you have a vision impairment but are able to correct this impairment with glasses or contact lenses, you can still pass the exam. However, you might be required to always wear corrective lenses while driving. If you're not able to meet these vision standards, but you meet the other DOT physical requirements, you may be also request an exemption.
